Kente Paper Wall Hanging with Saint Akua

Families and Children Creative Workshop part of Black History Month at Milton Keynes Arts Centre

Kente is a traditional Ghanaian cloth from the Asante and Ewe tribe hand-woven with strips of cotton and silk. Historically the cloth was worn by royalty, however, in modern times, the cloth is worn to celebrate special occasions or used in everyday fashions.

In this workshop, we learned about the legend of Kente and made paper wall hangings consisting of repetitive geometric patterns with symbolic colours.

How it celebrates Black History Month?
“Black History Month to me is not just sharing the history of Black cultures to preserve them in the present. This workshop will allow you to learn about the Ghanaian tradition of weaving in order to not appropriate the culture but appreciate the culture. Kente cloth is becoming more known and with that comes the responsibility to share the history and educate people.”
